BAN ON SHARK FINNING

26 February 2016 By In Blog style

Understanding that Shark Finning refers to the practice of removing shark fins, its retention on board vessels, and the discard of the carcasses at sea.

Stating full awareness of the practice being in contradiction to the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and its International Plan of Action for the Conservation and Management of Sharks, as well as the resolutions of a number of other international marine institutions and organizations,

And identifying that such practice causes the death of sharks, threatening its populations, and potentially its survival being a ‘vulnerable species’,

Adopts the following to be integral to our procurement policy:

1) To condemn and prohibit the practice of shark finning.

2) To avoid transacting business with any vessel that has been identified by a Regional Fisheries Management Organization (RFMO), national or international authority to have practiced shark finning.

3) To avoid transacting business with any company that does not prohibit and condemn shark finning practices.
